Hard foods may get trapped in the hole left after the extraction, causing pain and discomfort while preventing the wound closure. Examples of the soft foods you can eat without worrying about your health are:

  • Yogurt
  • Apple sauce
  • Smoothie
  • Blended soups
  • Broth
  • Pudding
  • Ice cream

While cold foods like Jell-O may reduce the discomfort in your mouth, dentists don’t recommend consuming overly cold or hot food. After offering a short relief, eating such foods may cause further problems with the wound.

Consider drinking lukewarm liquids, which don’t contain any hard components. For example, a smoothie must be well blended in order for the small pieces not to get stuck in the extraction site.

The next day after the surgery, when the wound begins to heal, you can start eating partially hard foods, such as scrambled eggs, oatmeal, and toast. Two to three days later, you can go on to normal foods. Just make sure you pay close attention to the way your mouth is feeling. If you still experience discomfort, put going back to normal food off for a couple of days.

Foods To Avoid After Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Even if you feel ravenous after the surgery, slow down. Dieting for one day isn’t just good for your gums, it’s excellent for your body. The below foods should be avoided right after the surgery.

  • Spicy and acidic foods, which can cause pain and irritation of the gums
  • Alcoholic beverages, which can irritate the extraction site and negatively affect the body after the pain medication
  • Grains, especially rice, which can get trapped in the wound
  • Hard-to-chew foods, which can cause pain, damage stitches, and delay the healing process.

It’s important to avoid smoking for at least 3 days since the smoke can cause complications.

It’s vital to keep the diet as healthy as possible to give the body enough nutrition to heal properly.

Avoid drinking beverages using a straw. You may disturb or dislodge the blood clot, leading to a delayed recovery.
